Such a wonderful night for us, and it’s received so much attention on Facebook (here and here), Redditimgur, BuzzFeed, Gawker, and Towleroad!  Really, the only thing on my mind was making it a memorable and unforgettable night for Ben. Thank you all for the well wishes!!

    1. Great going guys, may you have many years together. As an ex army wife(guy). I married Frank when he had just become a capt. We were together until he died of a brain tumor. He died a Col.
Point being protect both of you, the army and I fought like hell—even over the body. He was a Jag. Officer and one of the best. That’s why we got away with being at the officers club at Fork McNare ole’ Generals Row. He defended many brother to keep them from losing to many benefits. Again Best of Luck my prays and well wishes. As ever, Steve

  4. This is the most adorable/awesome thing i have seen since the couple who got engaged in San Diego (mostly because thats where i live lol) I wish you guys a long and happy marriage and all the love and support i have to give. It is so great to know that we have come so far but we still have so far to go. Fo all those who are still waiting for your time to shine, just be happy for what you have right now and know that a revolution is in progress!!!

  5. May I die today with this wonderful picture in my mind. After so much anguish the past few days, to see two men becoming engaged in the WH in front of the Tree is just lovely. So happy. I missed my chance for this kind of happiness but have committed myself to justice for all lbgtq folks.

  6. Much love and best wishes for a lifetime of happiness and Joy. It’s because of your service to our country, that Americas liberty and justice for all prevails and grows daily.
    Thank you!

  7. Congratulations to you and Ben. We just celebrated our 39th anniversary this past Saturday. Wishing you both many happy years together. Namaste

Wrote Matthew on Facebook “Such a special night surrounded by wonderful people in an amazing place, and the best is still yet to come with Ben Schock. Thanks for all the wonderful greetings and messages, and thanks to Barack Obama and Michelle Obama for lending us your home for the occasion!”

Congratulations to you two! Y’all are heartwarming and adorable.

  9. Attended a Christmas party at the White House many years ago; would much rather have been there the day of your proposal. Semper Fi.

  10. I married my best friend on saturday in Washington State and it feels wonderful. Congrats and may your life journey be as happy and joyful as our past 17 years!!!

  11. Congratulations! What a wonderful picture, and a wonderful idea for making the moment special. Thank you for sharing your love.

  12. Oh, Matthew… and here I thought I was the drama queen! ROFLMFAO!!! I am SO happy for you and Ben – and what a memory-maker for the two of you. I haven’t stopped giggling and smiling since I first saw the picture posted on PinkNews.co.uk over an hour ago. It was a different angle of the first photo, and showed more of the people in the background – all of them smiling and looking on. I caught the headline first, and then saw the photo – “THAT’S MATTHEW!!” I just had to tear over here and tell you both how happy I am for you. Your second photo is priceless – the look on Ben’s face, a perfect balance of joy and shock – and I can’t say as I’d blame him. A very short time ago you were squirming in your shorts at the Marine Ball, and now you’re making history in the halls of the White House. My love and prayers for you both, always.

  13. Wow Ben things are definitely getting better, And what a beautiful shot of the two of you. I wish you can be the bud and confidant and love of eachothers life as long as you are on the earth together. Ken and I are so happy for you Where and when will you marry? You will always still be partly the sweet young kid in courdoroy jumpers, to me. I regret missing the parts of your life that I did, but I can see you are full of doing good things and taking care of what must be done as a good soldier. I think of you with pride, not an “owning pride: like a mom and dad might have, but a good pride nevertheless that just comes from the grace of being connected in love with you.
Big Blessings should be in store for you two. Love, Ken and Jeri

  14. Congratulations sir. I know that I find your story inspiring and have for awhile. Know that it has helped me to realize that I should be proud and unafraid of who I am in the military. I cite you as one of my role models and am working to be ‘me’ in my service as well. Thank you for the inspiration and best wishes for you and your fiance.
